Questions Answers
How many people have confused you and the guy who did Borat? I get that a lot! I make restaurant reservations and get mixed up with Borat all the time. But in person, no mix-up.
Given skating's reputation with sexuality, what do you make of the situation going on in Russia right now with gay rights? How do you think the sport will respond given its popularity there? I honestly think that social issues should really not be a part of the Games. People should have their rights to be who they want to be and love who they want to love.
The Olympics is about showing what you've done with your life, your dream as an athlete and sharing that with the World. The choices that are being made right now with the Sochi games are really sad and disrespectful to the athletes.
We're all athletes, there should be no one who has to hide who they are. It's kind of unfortunate that it's popped up now and I hope it gets resolved so all athletes regardless of sexual orientation feel welcomed at the Games.
Sorry for this being off topic, but you were great in Blades of Glory. What was it like hanging out with Will Ferrell? It was an incredible experience, surreal, and the film actually captures the quirks of figure skating that is actually true. Will Ferrell is really a nice, genuine person, and appreciative of figure skaters.
Is the bottom of the skate like, razor thin? If so, have you ever been cut by it? Ive always wondered that about ice skates. Yes, someone landed a double axel on my leg, and I had 21 stitches.
This is a totally off topic question, who is your favorite Ranger of all time? I would have to say Lundqvist...I've met him and he seemed like a nice person.
What would Brian Boitano do? If he were here right now?
What are you up to these days and your plans after you graduate? Btw how was japan and what's with the game show? Japan was amazing...love Tokyo. Was there for 30 hours. Game show is airing in Sept. Basically had to balance on a stand the size of a coaster, 20 ft in the air, and the stand get smaller and smaller.
Whats it like staying in the Olympic village? The Olympic Village is incredible. Every country. Every sport. Housed under one roof. Although we're all different between sports and language, there's this shared mission of purpose. We just get each other. We all spend our whole lives doing sport with the hopes of getting to this point. We also really wait once every four years, unlike basketball and football, to showcase what we can really do.
Do you still get carded? Always! Do you know I'm almost 29?
Is rampant sex at the Olympics fact or media driven fantasy? There are different Olympic experiences for different athletes.
I wouldn't know because the ladies figure skating event is near the end of the games, so my experience is different from an athlete who would compete early on and have their competition over with during the first week.
How often do you skate now? Depending on my class schedule...4-5x a week, when school rolls around 2x a week.
Did you march in both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympics? Did you prefer one over the other -- and why? (I know that all athletes are entitled to participate in both, but some skip one or the other for various reasons.) I preferred the Opening just because there's so much anticipation. There's just so much energy and there are just so many hopes ... so many dreams .. so much promise. It was my favorite event at the Olympics.
Can you still get your ankles above your head? Yes. That is something I can still do ... surprisingly.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure? Probably Gossip Girl. I absolutely love that show. When I moved to New York and it was on, I liked a lot of the same places. There are things that I could relate too.
So what is your favorite olympic sport aside from Figure Skating? Gymnastics, what these gymnasts do are mind boggling. It takes so much strength and balance. They put their bodies through the ringer.
How did you come up with the idea for Snoxx? I was up late with a friend of mind. I was frustrated with doing laundry with socks that didn't match, and there is something that needs to be done about it. Socks that snap together! Everyone loses their socks.
Hi! Big fan here! As well as aspiring figure skater, any tips/suggestions to improving in competitions? It all happens in practice, need to prepare yourself to do it everyday, even if you're tired or not feeling well. Practice translates to competitions.
What are you studying, and what interests you beside figure skating? I am competing my core requirements, I'm likely to declare a major in political science. Columbia has a great liberal arts program that gives me a good foundation.
What is your workout/nutrition routine when you aren't training? A very specific and healthy diet...lean protein, vegetables, minimal food intake and heavy exercise. Running, Yoga, Soul Cycle, and heavy core workouts.
How do you keep from getting extremely dizzy when doing spins? Stay centered, stay in one place...as soon as you start traveling and creating distance, then you will feel dizzy.
Hi Sasha! Thanks for talking to us! What's it like being a world-renowned Olympian attending college? Do people recognize you right away in class? No! I'm under the radar at school. I was before their time, as I'm a bit older. It's a good experience for me, because I can blend in at school.
What are some things you had to give up or not be able to participate in because you were training for the olympics? Any regrets? I have no regrets because it was what I was driven to do. I sacrificed school, going to college at the traditional time, hanging out with friends. Really a lot of the experiences that one experiences from age 7-25. But these experiences have shaped me as well. I'm kind of doing things in reverse.
What do you do for fun? I really enjoy yoga, running, taking weekend trips into nature and good friends. Right now, my puppy takes a lot of my spare time.
Hi Sasha! I am a HUGE fan! What was your favorite program ever and your favorite time competiting it? Thanks so much :) My Olympic short program in 2006 is one of my favorites. That event was pretty much the pinnacle of my skating career and I'll always remember it fondly.
Whats the meanest thing you've ever heard a skater say to another skater? I feel like I try to block negative energy and let that go.
Off the top of my head, I would just say that skaters get very possessive and territorial. If you happen to get in their way, they aren't afraid to lash out and get their space back.
Do you have fond memories of your 2006 free skate because it won you a medal, or not so well because of how it began? It was a beautiful program with amazing music. Romeo and Juliet was the program that I did for my long at the Olympics and it really was a labor of love. Even though it wasn't the magical Olympic program that I wanted, I found some strength deep inside that I didn't have and that taught me a lot.
I realize that it has really served me well in my life's transition and helped me to fight back when things aren't going perfectly.
Can you wear the Snoxx in skates, or do the buttons get in the way? I've never tried! I wear Snoxx around the house and to work out. Need to wear tights for ice/figure skating.
So proud of you and THANK YOU for all of your hard work! Who are your role models? What inspires you? Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Robinson is very inspiring. I always admire athletes that deal with something other than just their sport and represent something bigger. Definitely Jackie Robinson.
Hi Sasha. Do you ever go down to Wollman Rink and show off just for fun? I would! I actually skated at Wollman quite a bit this fall when Hurricane Sandy took out Chelsea Piers. It's a beautiful rink.
What is your favorite figure skating trick? It can be the one you find most aesthetically pleasing, the one you are best at, or anything else - I don't want to restrict you. Spins...the wide spin.
Hi. What made you choose Columbia university? I love NYC! I wanted to be in a mature college situation, they have a GS program that is great, and I can pursue business opportunities while studying and going to school as well.
How tall are you? What size are your skates? I am 5'2" and my shoe size is a size 5.
Two part question: What sport, when combined with figure skating, would make it more exciting? And would you consider taking up fencing? I would love to fence! I think fencing is such a beautiful sport with such a wonderful history. I don't think it would be a good idea to hand me any equipment though because of the liability.
What other sports besides figure skating do you like to watch and/or play? I like to play soccer. I like to play my own made up form of rugby. What I love most is to dance.
Who are your favorite current skaters? I'd have to say Evan Lysacek is probably my favorite skater. I've known him since I was 12 years old. His determination and work ethic really show you that it isn't always the most talented person, but the person most willing to take it home.
If you were not a figure skater, what career path would you have gone on? Very interesting question!
I always imagined myself as a trauma surgeon or a litigator, or maybe even a philosopher.
Can you play hockey? I can skate better than a hockey player, but I have no stick-puck coordination.
How much do off-ice workouts play into your training ...and would you ever consider teaching classes? I think off-ice is incredibly important to skating. Yoga is a part of my regiment, as is jogging and pilates. I also have come up over the years with a tailored warmup and cool down that's helpful to skating that incorporates all of these. I have actually have taught a few classes and seminars that teach skaters to prepare. It's also something I can do through Thuzio. (www.thuzio.com)
Hi Sasha thanks for doing this. What was the first moment when you realized that you wanted to skate for a living? I think when I was probably 11 or 12 years old and I did my first show. I went and then watched my favorite skaters on Champions on Ice and Stars on Ice and that's when I realized that people do this for work ... performing. I said 'you know what, this could be a career opportunity.'
What is your favorite restaurant in NYC? That's tricky because I always love trying new places. I have some go-to's that are fantastic like the Pearl Oyster Bar and Meatball Shop.
I was a freshmen at Aliso Niguel High when you were a senior. Did you ever attend class? Did you have a social life (assuming you had a rigorous training schedule) in your high school days? Now that I'm looking back at it I don't think I ever saw you on campus. Honestly I just took one class at Aliso Niguel and really focused on training, doing most of my classes in a private school. It was really for the experience. I wanted to go through what my peers were going through.
What are the relationships between figure skaters like? Are there big rivalries? There will always be a very intense competitive nature within the sport because we sacrifice and dedicate our lives to this passion called figure skating. We want to do our best and we want to be our best. That's always part of the sport when you are competing at a very high level.
What was the most difficult time in your competitive career, 2002-06, and why? You'd be surprised. I actually think it was when I tried to come back at 25 and make the 2010 Olympic team. Between the injuries and the time off ... You don't have that young, athletic enthusiasm that you have in the beginning.
You mentioned running as a hobby. Have you ever competed in any races? What are your personal bests for distances? I run for fun, not in a race. I don't go very fast. I'll jog for 45 minutes to an hour just to get the heart rate up and to be outside.
Hi Sasha! How do you balance school and your career? Ivy League schools are hard, man. It is really difficult. Some semesters, I do part-time to go on tour. School is my passion right now. I also take the summer programs which helps. Columbia's student body is so bright and competitive, and it's a wonderful environment to learn in.
Hi Sasha, Can you explain how figure skating training has shaped your body's anatomy differently than say training for any other sport? If you stop moving and start sitting, your body changes a lot. That's for sure. It's why I'm a very active person, always running, or skipping, or taking some type of class. Sure, my body is different now than it was at 18 or 19, but skating built up an amazing cardio capacity and is amazing for balance, flexibility.
Alright, on the off chance that we cross paths one day and I recognize you, what is my best pick up line I can throw your way? I was going to try the classic, "hey girl... let me buy you some mozzarella sticks." On a more serious note, what's something that you've always wanted to do but never had to chance to? What type of books do your read, and what are your go to favorites? I do love to read. When I'm taking classes, I don't have that much time for free reading. I really enjoy historical novels, something like The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a favorite.
Why do you go by Sasha? Alexandra is a beautiful name! At school, I generally go by Alex. Sasha is just the Russian nickname for all Alexandra or Alexander's, so it is a heritage thing.
What's Scott Hamilton like in real life? Scott Hamilton is a wonderful person, limitless energy, positive and empowered attitude. He's inspiring person to a lot of people around the world. I've been so lucky to work with him and get to know him as a person.
Seriously though, congratulations. What does your training schedule look like when you are gearing up for a competition? I remember the days of college swimming and that was intense enough. I couldn't imagine training on the Olympic level. My daily training schedule would start with 30 minutes of running to warm up, some pilates, stretching and core training Then I'd skate for 90 minutes, take a break, skate for another 90 minutes, cool down, go to the gym and do circuit training or sprints and then some physical therapy.
Hi Sasha, love how they named the "I" spin after you. What changes (if any) do you think can be made to competition rules to make figure skating more exciting? I think it is very exciting. You lose a lot of it on TV. When you see it live, you have a different appreciation for the speed, height, athleticism and power. I think it's a really incredible sport.
What prompted your decision to come back to the 2010 nationals? And follow-up: what was going through your mind the day of the competition? How did you feel? I was training really well the year prior and I didn't feel completely finished with the sport.
I had this desire to compete and I didn't want to have any regrets. I was just compelled from within with that thought.
I see that we are currently attending the same university. If people were to recognize you on campus, would you prefer people to ignore you or to come up and say hello? A few people do recognize me, and it's fun to say hello. I welcome it, but it's also nice to blend in...
I play hockey, so I can relate to figure skating...Do you have bad knees? I think you know that it's just part of the sport.
We totally beat up our bodies for two decades and the effects will be there. It is part of my life and I've learned to manage it. Things like swimming, yoga and pilates help me with that.
Hello there! I was wondering, given all your accomplishments, what was the happiest moment of your life so far? After skating a perfect performance is an amazing feeling, but you are still alone, and it is a fleeting moment. The relationships in your life is more satisfying because it is not fleeting and something you can share.
What is it that you do in order to calm your nerves when going to do a routine in front of thousands of people? You really have to keep it simple. You have to focus on your breathing. Focus on your training. Trust your body and don't let the outside distractions take over.
How often are you recognized on the street? Not often. If maybe I go to a Rangers game, it will happen more often, but if I'm just going out like anyone else, not that much.
Who have you met at the Olympics that left you star struck? I don't think anyone! Every athlete is amazing and has their own story to the table. I get more fascinated and I have respect for different sports that I haven't come across. It's more of a melting pot of admiration rather than being blown away from one competitor.
What's your favorite near-Columbia hangout? Milano's Market, I get lunch there quite often.
What was it like handing the phone to President Bush during the 2002 Opening Ceremony? I called my Mom, and she didn't believe me when I handed the phone over. She fell of the chair when he answered the phone. He was very gracious and in the spirit of the games. I was 17, and it was an awe moment.
What is your favorite song to skate to and why is it Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing? Is it Aerosmith? I love classical music, even Frank Sinatra, the range and emotion in the music makes me want to skate, move and interpret.
Did you and Shaun White actually date? I remember him having a huge crush on you. Really the only time I met him was at the Closing Ceremonies, after most of that had already been written. him. We come from very different sports and we don't really overlap. He's an incredibly gifted athlete and I'm proud of him, but there were no dates.
How much can you bench press? Men do bench press for lifts, but no I don't bench press.
When you go to the bar, what's your drink of choice? It's seasonal...white wine, champagne, bellini.
If I scrolled through Sasha Cohen's iPod, I would find... Everything...Led Zeppelin, Robin Thicke, Etta James, Michael Jackson, Glenn Miller, Eminem...I like to keep it fresh, something for every mood.
This will probably get buried, but you and I went to elementary school together in Pasadena! Long time ago!
How legit was blades of glory. I think a lot of the personality representations were fairly accurate, which is comical because I think most people think they were a joke. If you were in the skating world, you could definitely pick up on some of that.

Questions Answers
What would Brian Boitano do? He'd use his magical fire breath to save the maidens fair.
With this statement, you have made me a figure skating fan for life. Glad to have you.
What's a normal workout day for you? People always make fun of your sport but then I'm like, they seem in pretty good shape... I do a short cardio session in the morning as a warmup and then I skate four 45-minute sessions. After that I'll go to the gym where I spend a lot of time doing explosive lifting (cleans, jerks, snatch, squats and some plyometrics) and then I end with a very intense cardio session. After that I'll head to rehab to protect against injuries.
What do figure skaters think of Blades of Glory? I thought that movie was hilarious, I love Will Ferrell. You just have to realize that a lot of the stuff in the movie is not how things really happen.
Given that every other professional sport seems to have drug issues, how prevalent are performance enhancing drugs in skating? Would you report violators? I think it's important to be fair and clean in any sport. I don't think they're very prevalent in my sport, but I am all about being clean and having a level playing-field.
After every Olympic figure skating event, there is a barrage of photos showing the athletes making very hilarious faces. Will you make hilarious faces for us? Do you have a favorite Olympian face? Watch my free skate at the U.S. Championships, let's just say I needed to blow my nose at the end of my program. I think that's as hilarious as it gets.
That did kind of drive me crazy when I saw you in the Kiss & Cry area...I thought "Get that kid a tissue!" lol. Make it a Puffs.
You get a lot of flack for not being artistic. Do you THINK you are artistic? (It seems like you certainly got into a character for west side story). Do you think program components are even the same as "the artistic mark" or is it something else entirely? I think last year's programs were definitely on the masculine side, but I think there were a lot of artistic elements while I was playing a character along with following the music. I have been working hard to find a nice balance between being athletic and artistic for this year's programs.
Also congratulations on your national title and your world finish- really amazing! Hard to believe you are in the top 10 at worlds without even going to a GP (And watching you jump into the boards and then bounce off like it hadn't even happened was pretty crazy...does anything phase you?) Thanks! I try not to let anything phase me, I feel like I am trained and ready for anything to happen. Sometimes you only get one opportunity in life and I wasn't going to let that affect me.
My name is Aaron Maxx. We cool? We cool.
Loved your short program last season. How much influence do you have in selecting your music? What do you think of Daft Punk's new album? First of all, I love the new Daft Punk album and I am always listening to it in my car. In regards to selecting my music, I have a lot of influence in selecting my own music, with help from my coaches, but it really comes down to if I love the music or not.
why does nobody skate to the music from Jurassic Park anymore? Did Tanya Harding ruin that for everyone? Haha, I may have to bring it back.
Figure Skating has a reputation for being a pretty conservative sport and pretty solidly "conservative Christian." I remember Paul Wylie being very vocally proselytizing, Scott Hamilton being a regular on the 700 club, and Kristi Yamaguchi appearing in a Mitt Romney ad. Do you find that to the be case? How has that affected you or your experience as a Jewish athlete? And do you think that reputation (real or deserved) has alienated people (younger audiences, gay and lesbians, etc) from being fans of the sport? While I agree with you that figure skating can be a conservative sport at times, I don't think that defines me or how I choose to carry myself. I don't think it has affected me, and I enjoy being a jewish athlete in this sport. If there is anyone that feels alienated, I hope to turn them into fans and make them feel more accepted.
What's your favorite jump? And non-jump element? Favorite jump: Triple Axel.
Favorite non-jump element: Footwork, especially for this year.
Is the choreography heavily planned by someone else? I mean, is there other people who decide your outfits and the songs? The choreo is planned by my choreographers, Pasquale Camerlengo and Lori Nichol, but we work together to make sure it looks correct for me to do it.
What is the reason people do not seem to ever wear an outfit more than once or twice? Are all outfits custom-made? The outfits are custom-made and I have a hand in designing them to go along with my music. I think people want to keep everyone on their toes and changing their costume is one way to do it.
Favourite place you've been to so far? Any place you wish you could go? My favorite place to skate is Japan, the fans there are amazing and so supportive.
I am really looking forward to visiting Israel some day.
Would you have wanted to come to Skate DownUnder in Sydney if it wasn't the same time as Champs Camp? I hope to one day travel to Australia, but probably not in an Olympic year. I hope to one day perform there.
Japan is great and so is Israel! Question: do you miss playing hockey? I do, a lot of my friends still play in the WHL and at D-1 and I love seeing them progress as I live through them.
What is your favourite type of Dinosaur? I have to go with the T-Rex, who I consider the most dominant dinosaur.
How important to you is your Jewish faith and how does it play into your everyday life? My faith is very important to me and it's a part of the way I grew up. I still practice to this day and make time to observe despite my training.
Hey Max, good luck! What kind of mental prep do you go through before an event to help ensure you are ready to be the best? I spend a lot of time with my psychologist and we go through a lot of the things that could happen at an event so I am ready for anything.
Have you wanted to do this your whole life? As I grew up, I played a lot of sports, but I fell in love with figure skating but I still love playing a lot of other sports.
What other sports did/do you play? Hockey: Link to www.youtube.com
But also basketball, baseball and gymnastics.
Hi Max, ice tech here. What's the most common pet peeve for you when it comes to the ice/arena? How often does the ice condition meet your standards? The most common pet peeve for me are when holes aren't patched on the ice properly because it's really easy to twist an ankle and get seriously injured.
I try not to be picky because I'm always on other people's ice and I just go with it.
How did figure skating go when you were in school? Any teasing because you're a guy? I skated before and after school, I did go to public school my entire life.
I took my sports very seriously and no one disrespected me because they saw how hard I was working.
I'm going to the 2014 National Champs to watch you compete for the Olympic spot!!! What can I expect?Any chance of meeting you?? Thanks for your support of figure skating and I always try and make time to meet my fans!
Hopefully you can expect to see two clean performances!
Whether or not you make it to Sochi 2014, do you plan to stay in figure skating for the 2018 Olympics? I'm taking things day by day. My short-term goal is to make the 2014 Olympic Team, but 2018 is definitely a long-term goal of mine.
Are you like michael phelps in the way that he eats like 10,000 calories a day when he's training? what's your diet like? I would love to eat as much as Michael Phelps! I don't think I burn as many calories as he does.
Mazel tov re your Skate America and NHK assignments. Before your GPs, will you defend your title at the US Int'l Classic in SLC (possible pre-match w/ Lysacek before Skate America??) and/or compete at another Senior B? All the best to you on the road to Sochi. I do plan to compete prior to my GP assignments, but I'm going to wait to announce where I will be competing.
No worries -- understand that you're not ready to announce. By the way, have fun at Champs Camp! Would love to see you in a ShibsSibs video!! Thanks! We have been talking about making one.
What's the funniest thing you've ever been thrown on the ice? The funniest thing may have been the time I had a stuffed animal thrown on the ice with my face taped to where the head should be.
Although, I have heard other skaters have had ladies underwear thrown on the ice for them...
Good luck with everything brother! What do you think about the S.Korean goddess, Yuna? Think you could out figure-skate her? She's just on a different level. She could be the Michael Jordan of figure skating right now.
Ever since I met you at the ice dreams tour, I have worked and pushed my self to do better. My mom (who is also my coach) always asks "what has motivated you to work harder recently?" I respond to "After seeing Max Aaron skate, I want to go somewhere with my skating. When he skated, he looked so happy on the ice and comfortable. That's what skating should be. Fun and comfortable to preform." Thank you for inspiring me so much. So my overall question is, whats your motivation? Who inspired you to skate and go somewhere with your skating? What would be some advice for a skater who wants to go somewhere with their skating? Thanks ! Thanks so much for your kind words!
My family has played a huge role in my motivation and I enjoy working hard every day and letting all that hard work play out on the ice. My advice is to make sure you love what you do, and if you do, that's motivation enough.
True that you are taking classes in both ballet and ballroom dance to improve your skating? When did you start taking them and how much time do you spend on them per week? Have you started to enjoy the classes for their own sake at all? Hope so. That is true that dance lessons can improve your skating if used in the right way. I have been doing both ballet and ballroom dance for a while and as I became more mature I began to enjoy them in their own way. I tried to perform them in the studio like it was a competition.
Do you play any video games? If so, which ones and what platform? Unfortunately I don't have time to play video games right now.
Do you want to compete in team competition in Olympic honestly? and what do figure skaters think about it? If I make the team I'd love to compete in the team event. It's another opportunity to win an Olympic medal.
Why didn't your Tron costume light up?? I couldn't make it work, trust me, I tried.
Weir Johnny is a great friend and he is so funny and entertaining to be around.
Max, Men's figure skating has a tendency to get made fun of... A lot. Out of curiosity, how old were you when you first started skating? Were you picked on because of your interests? And how did you deal with that? Like I said before, I think everyone respected how hard I was working on my craft so I didn't have to deal with being picked on. I'd only hope that to be the case with everyone else.
How do you deal with nerves and what is the hardest aspect of overcoming these nerves? Love you so much! I try and prepare myself so that there are no nerves. I enjoy figure skating so much, so why be nervous to do something you love. Life is too short to let nerves get in the way.
why is it the red wings? Most of my family lives in the area and I always went back and forth to Detroit so I always went to games. My favorite players have always been Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov.
Favourite sport other than figure skating? Favourite athlete/team of that sport? I look forward to competing against the best athletes in the sport, I'm always up for a challenge.
Thoughts on the potential comebacks of Evan Lysacek and Johnny Wier and how this affects your preparation for the Olympic season? Thoughts on Evgeni Plushenko's comeback? Thanks so much for your support!
How much of a whirlwind has this offseason been? How have you dealt with the distractions that come with your newfound fame? I have been trying to keep everything the same. What I did last year worked for me so I am hoping to keep training as hard as I can.
Favorite Hockey team? Detroit Red Wings.
Who is your favorite women figure skater? Gracie Gold.
Why are we NOT surprised! ;) I do have a lot of other favorites too :).
:) thanks for reply. besides her, Are there any skaters who inspire you as a skater? Michelle Kwan, Ashley Wagner, Sarah and Emily Hughes and rink-mate Agnes Zawadzki.
, I'd like to say you are my role model and favorite male figure skater. I've skated my whole life with the dream of one day making the Olympics. Unfortunately injuries have made that an unrealistic goal. Anyway, I loved watching your short program last season, it was fantastic! Also, your quad salchows are incredible!!! It was incredibly motivating to watch. I wish you the best of luck with making the 2014 Sochi Olympics! :) Also, thank you for doing this AMA! Edit: I guess I need a question, so how long did it take you to land your quad salchow? It was unbelievable to watch! First of all, I am sorry to hear about your injuries but I am honored to have you as a fan.
The quad Sal took me a couple months to land my first one.
If you were gonna skate to one song and one song only what would it be? I think you know the answer to this one.
Does figure skating translate well to hockey? I keep picturing a certain scene from The Mighty Ducks. Some things, like speed and aggression do, but a lot of it is quite different.
Wu, Kenny Wu.
What's the weirdest things you saw in your audience? I saw someone pass out right before Daisuke Takahashi skated.
What are you doing on the internet? America is counting on you to bring home the gold! I'm going back to the rink now!
Just curious what type of reaction you got from friends and family going from hockey to figure skating? My family has always been very supportive of anything I set my mind to doing.
What is your favorite pizza topping? Pepperoni and cheese.
How did your parents contribute to your athletic success? What did your father or mother say to you that helped you find your inner fire!?! The constant support my parents have given me has made me who I am today. They have always kept me grounded and humble and to keep pushing for my goals.
Any chance that you'll make news here and tell your loyal redditor audience what your new SP music is? ;) If not, anything you can tell us about how your Carmen FS is coming along? I am trying to keep this a secret for as long as I can, I am trying to build some suspense and that everyone enjoys both programs.
The free skate is going well and is definitely different for me and a step in the right direction.
When you were 15, what were you doing in skating? Like what kind of jumps and spins? When I was 15 I was doing all my triple jumps except for the Axel. My spins were alright, I don't think I was a great spinner when I was younger.
I work for OCOG "Sochi 2014". My tech position on one of the Mountain Cluster venues is not related to Figure Skating, but... Have you been to Sochi yet, maybe for Grand Prix last December? If yes, what do you think of our "Iceberg" venue? If not, maybe you'd be kind to share opinions from your friends/trainers? Thanks! Not yet, obviously I hope to be there next winter!
What does your diet consist of and how much effort do you put into maintaining your diet? My diet consists of high-protein and low-carbs. I put a lot of effort into maintaining my diet.
What drew you to skating to the music of Tron Legacy? Are you a huge Daft Punk fan or a fan of the movie as well? Its one of my favourite movies and soundtracks! I love Daft Punk! I loved the music.
What are your favorite laces to use? I use the Edea laces.
In the past you have mentioned wanting to visit Israel...that you and your sister Maddie would like to skate there. Do you have any plans to visit Israel in the near future? I hope that one day I'll be able to take my birthright trip to Israel.
Do you enjoy watching or playing other sports? I love watching other sports, especially hockey and basketball. I take inspiration from other athletes in other sports.
Hi Max, thank you for doing this and congratulations on your break-out season! With the change from using instrumental-only music to allowing skaters the opportunity to use music with lyrics in effect after Olympic Season, are there songs with lyrics that you are itching to try out in competition? That will certainly be a discussion I will have with my coaches in the future.
, best of luck to you in the Olympics. Secondly, how does your typical day look like? Thanks! Check up top for that answer.
THAT'S WHAT BRIAN BOITANO'D DO. May I add, he'd also do two Salchows and a triple Lutz while wearing a blindfold?
