Weekly Non-P5 Discussion Thread

2020.10.20 17:00 cinciforthewin Weekly Non-P5 Discussion Thread

This is a weekly thread to discuss football for teams not found in the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, SEC, or Pac 12 (FBS Independent, Group of 5, FCS, D2, D3, NAIA, and others). Discussion should be limited to football in these schools.
Hello All, I'm your host, cinciforthewin. Talk about anything.

G5 Top 10 Voting

Polls will (normally) open up on Monday's and will be posted again in the Non-P5 Discussion thread. Results of the polls will be posted on Wednesdays. You must have a valid reddit account to vote. Pay attention that you don't have repeat teams. If any team is repeated, the poll will be voided and removed. A valid reddit username is required. I may or may not do random pm checks to make sure the account has actually voted depending on how I feel on Tuesday evening about the results received.
Conferences who have a planned football restart later this fall will be added to the poll at the following dates (Poll prior to starting games):
  • MWC: This Week!
  • MAC: November 2nd
I wanted to keep it somewhat consistent in how we're moving foward. Those who had games scheduled at the start of the season get a bit more of a benefit of the doubt, but I wasn't planning on conferences restarting their season mid season.

2020.10.19 14:48 dovetc Achievements not working....

Specifically the one where I create a cadet branch. I have restarted CK3 and Steam and tried to do the easy one where you create it as the Duke of Kent in the earlier start date (he can create a cadet branch immediately) and it just doesn't register.
I've had the odd achievement fail to register now and then back in ck2, but it was usually a fluke. This one won't register despite a dozen attempts to get it.
Any tips on correcting this glitch?

2020.10.19 13:17 naut-the-tot Help with university search !!!

Basically within the past year, I studied at the university of kent in the U.K. as an international student from the US. I transferred and got acceptance in September, however due to covid and needing an extension to apply for my visa, I wasn’t able to receive my CAS for my new visa. Today is the last register date and they aren’t willing to wait for a home office decision, despite this being a problem they created. Ultimately they say unless medically I receive my decision by the end of today, I cannot study until next year ! Meaning I miss a whole year( amazing! ) they’ve basically screwed me over completely and don’t seem to care, but ANYWAYS : I am looking for a new university to transfer to as an undergraduate in psychology, however I need January intake, which can make the search a bit a more difficult. If anyone knows any universities in the U.K. that allows undergrad January intake, please please let me know, you’d be a great help!

2020.10.17 02:38 beary_good ELI Hal Jordan: What's the deal with DC Future State?

Q: What is Future State?
A: DC Future State will be a two-month event that will span the entire DC Universe line in the months of January and February of 2021, similar to Convergence. It takes place several years into a possible future (set in 2030 and beyond), when the fabric of time and space has been torn asunder (which is more or less a typical Tuesday in the DC world). The mantles of heroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman will be held by a new generation of superheroes, some familiar (like Jonathan Kent, the new Superman), and others new (like Yara Flor, the new Wonder Woman).
The event begins with the one-shot Generations: Shattered #1, which will release on January 5. The one-shot is written by Dan Jurgens, Andy Schmidt, and Robert Venditti, and will feature artwork from Ivan Reis, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, Aaron Lopresti, Fernando Pasarin, Paul Pelletier, and others. In February, another one-shot titled Generations: Forged will close off the event.
In March 2021, DC will continue on publishing its regular line of monthlies. Certain plotlines may carry from Future State may carry over to the ongoing titles.

Q: What's the story behind all of these books?
A: The Future State books will be divided into three groups: the Batman Family, the Superman Family, and the Justice League Family. Each family of books has its own overarching storyline to deal with.
In the Batman books, Bruce Wayne is presumed to be dead (but shockingly enough, he isn't!), and Gotham has become a police state led by the Magistrate. A new mysterious figure has taken on the name of Batman, while Nightwing leads the Resistance against the Magistrate.
In the Superman books, Superman has exiled himself from Earth, and joined up with the New Gods. Meanwhile, Jon Kent was taken on his father's mantle, and a young Brazilian woman named Yara Flor has become a new Wonder Woman.
In the Justice League books, new heroes under familiar mantles come together, while their identities remain secret from one another. The books will also explore what happens when the Speed Force is disrupted, the Green Lantern power battery is dead, and a Teen Titans Academy is destroyed.

Q: Is there any required pre-reading?
A: Nothing is absolutely required to jump into these titles, but there are a few books that lead into this event and will give you an idea of what this new future looks like. Dark Nights: Death Metal is the big Crisis-level event that leads up to DC Future State, and you can read up about it right here.
Additionally, Dan Jurgens and Kevin Nowlan's short story "Generations: Fractured" from Detective Comics #1027 is a prelude to Generations: Shattered.
There are also snippets scattered through Detective Comics #1027 and Batman: The Joker War Zone #1 as well as some of the current ongoings that tease what is yet to come in Future State.

Q: Gimme the breakdown of titles. Let's go!
A: Here are the titles. You can read up descriptions for each title in the links below.

Q: Is this basically 5G?
A: In a way, yes. It has been speculated for a while that DC had planned a line-wide relaunch that would see vast sweeping status quo changes across the DC line, including several mantle changes, in a branding initiative called 5G (the fifth generation of heroes). While 5G seems to be no longer happening, elements of those old plans appear to have been repurposed for this two-month event.

Q: Isn't 5G the thing that causes Coronavirus?
A: Shut up, Hal. Stop believing everything you see on YouTube!

Q: Where is Hal Jordan in all of this, anyway?
A: He's either lost in space, dead, or in prison. The possibility of all three cannot be ruled out during this time.

2020.10.16 19:24 truegerudo Manager not responding to maternity leave request

England, Kent
I'm a nurse working for a health care company contracted by the NHS and have been part of this team for just over a year. I informed my manager early on about my pregnancy due to required risk assessments and also to ask about maternity leave as I will have to take it as early as possible for personal reasons which I also explained.
I sent this request in writing in August and have not heard back since. I contacted HR who said they can't assist me as it's down to my manager. I sent a follow up email and still no response. It's getting to a point where I will have to delay my personal plans because it will require a lot of planning which I can't do unless I have a confirmed date.
Am I within my rights to start my maternity leave at my proposed date which is within the company policy? Even without my manager's approval? Policy says earliest is 11 weeks before week of due date which is in line with government guidelines.
I also haven't had a risk assessment still. The union said they will assist me but I'd rather not rock the boat as work is stressful enough atm. My partner thinks I'd be within my rights to stop going to work, any thoughts on that?

2020.10.15 13:50 Ideasandthoughts [AMNESIA] A lengthy analysis of Ukyo

Here we are, a special post for Ukyo~!
Ukyo isn't really talked about much either, but I hope I did him some justice with this lengthy post. I included a few translations from his novel because why not?
Warning: Again, huge wall of text ahead.
Links to analyses of other characters: Toma, Kent, Ikki, Shin
Isn't he adorable?
Once I could clearly see the entrance to her apartment complex, I saw someone coming out from it. It’s her. She is alive. As she was walking, her soft hair fluttered in the wind. Her lips were curled into a slight smile and her footsteps were light. Tears came out, wetting my cheeks. I wiped them with the palm of my hand. Before she leaves, I hurriedly go up and try to speak with her. However, I couldn’t.
“You’re late”. She walked towards someone who had been waiting for her. It was a young man with dark, slightly curly hair and a sharp gaze. I’ve seen him before. Or rather, I know him. His name is Shin, she told me he was her childhood friend. He worked part-time in the kitchen at Meido no Hitsuji.
————————————————-
As I took a deep breath to calm down, I could see their hands connected in front of my eyes. They were holding hands. She said something to him and Shin looked sideways while holding out his hand, which she happily held on to. I saw the whole thing from beginning to end. They seemed like lovers. No matter how close they were like siblings, would siblings walk hand in hand? It became hard to breathe and I clutched my chest, my heart throbbing as if in denial.
(from Ukyo's novel, when he travels to Shin's World)
Ukyo is introduced as a mysterious character whose motives are unclear.
1. Doesn’t really have much of a relationship with MC in any of the routes, except his own
Heart World - A guest at the lodge MC met during the Shinano trip. Helped out in looking for MC during the incident. Why would you room in with him, seriously?
Spade World - Appears as a customer at Meido no Hitsuji, warning MC to be careful. Doesn’t do anything else other than that and is sane throughout the route
Clover World - A weirdo wandering the streets that MC meets during her walks home. Basically, just stay with Kent and he’ll be like “Darn it, you won’t die easily then” pffffttt... Turns out he was a regular customer at Meido no Hitsuji before MC lost her memories
Diamond World - Has the craziest version of Ukyo - probably even more so than in his own route (he goes crazy in EVERY encounter while in his route he actually has pretty good control). Million dollar question: Cage or Well? :)
Joker World - A mysterious guy who pops up here and there to give MC warnings and keep her safe. Revealed to be from another world, and was lovers with MC in his original world.

2. The not-so-secret secret character and the Joker
His route in the first game can be unlocked only after getting the Good Endings of all the other routes.
He has 2 sides to his personality - the normal, nice Ukyo and the twisted murderer Ukyo
In Japanese, his normal version is referred to OmoteUkyo (表ウキョウ - 表 meaning surface/front) and his crazy version is referred to as UraUkyo (裏ウキョウ - 裏 meaning back/reverse side).
When speaking about themselves and to other people, OmoteUkyo uses ore (俺) and kimi (君) while UraUkyo uses ore (オレ) and omae (オマエ) respectively. (Basically normal Ukyo speaks like a normal person and crazy Ukyo speaks like a delinquent lol).
Interestingly, MC talks to Ukyo casually even though Ukyo is older than her (before she lost her memories and after she regained them). She calls Ukyo without honorifics and speaks informally unlike with Ikki and Kent. It was revealed that Ukyo himself asked MC to speak casually with him in the game ^^
Ukyo also does this to Kent in Kent’s route but gets a different reaction lol
Kent: I don’t think a stranger like you should be calling my name without honorifics.
Ukyo: I’m sorry, it’s just that we knew each other before.
Kent: …What?
He is symbolised by the Joker - which is often associated with The Fool in Tarot. This card is the first card (numbered 0) and symbolises the beginning of a long journey. The Fool is often reckless but daring, not knowing what lies ahead but jumps straight into the challenge. It really makes sense in Ukyo’s context too, with him travelling to different worlds and not caring about anything other than saving MC.

3. Soft-hearted, clumsy and lonely
He is very emotional and cries easily. (Well, he’s terrible at poker)
Acts like a homeless person throughout his route in the first game… and somehow manages to fall into a lake while sleeping xD
He often feels like an outsider and gets emotional whenever the Meido no Hitsuji staff become friendly with him and invite him to their events.
His senses are distorted… probably due to all that travelling and dying many times
He sleeps outside in hot and cold weather like it’s nothing.
In Later, the other characters team up to torture his taste buds by serving weird things… but they don’t seem to work on him at all, much to the bewilderment of everybody. He also ambushes everyone during a water-gun fight by sneaking up on them without wearing shoes, to which he points out that walking barefoot doesn’t hurt at all since he doesn’t feel any pain o_o
In other media and the sequels, he tends to become the butt of the joke and the target of everyone’s bullying - because his reactions are the strongest and he’s the easiest to make fun of.
Basically the butt of the joke ranking goes something like this… (from least to most):
Toma = Ikki = UraUkyo > Shin >>> Kent >>>>> OmoteUkyo
Guess it also helps that his VA is also cute and adorable irl (Ukyo’s VA and Shin’s VA are chaotic when paired together xD)
His most prominent character trait is definitely his self-sacrifice. He is willing to go through multiple worlds and multiple deaths just to save his beloved. Even when he finds out MC is dating another guy in another world, he stands back and simply wishes her all the happiness.

4. Has an… interesting relationship with Toma
No, not that kind of relationship. (Though there’s that one fujoshi option in Ukyo’s route to kinda-sorta ship them - Toma and Shin will not be impressed if you choose that though LMAO)
First of all, some similarities:
- Obviously, both of them have a crazy side to them - though in Ukyo’s case it’s more like a totally different being while Toma’s madness is part of his normal self.
- They’re the only LI who appear in bad endings in routes other than their own.
- They’re the only LI whose Normal Endings are terrible have them disappear and not have any chance of being with MC at all
- There are a few similarities in their routes - the potted plant falling from above, MC being pushed onto the train tracks, a cabike almost running MC over, the fanclub girls wielding scissors… o_o
- His and Toma’s routes are the only ones where the suspicion bar is maxed out from the very beginning. In Shin’s route, the bar maxes out on the 2nd day, while for Ikki and Kent it happens much, much later.

Ukyo always seems to be bothered by Toma in some way hahaha
He goes on full crazy in Toma’s route, while Toma can be crazy in Ukyo’s route if you don’t choose wisely
Also, Toma is the only LI who doesn’t meet Ukyo in person in his own route. Maybe even Ukyo is too scared to directly confront him lol
In Later, Ukyo implies that he has been brutally murdered in another world by Toma (though he gets interrupted before he could give the specifics - now I’m curious)
Also there’s this scene:
Ukyo: I’m wondering what good do you see in me… I mean, I’m an idiot, an airhead, I can’t keep calm, I act like a little girl, I’m like a ghost, a suspicious guy, a death god.
MC: A death god…?
Ukyo: My hair is long, I can’t do double-digit calculations, I lack common sense, I have no friends, I’m a self-proclaimed photographer but I suck at it! Also, it’s different for me, but you haven’t known me well for very long, have you?
MC: …Ukyo, I don’t really get what you mean…
Ukyo: Besides, I don’t know why but you have so many high-spec good-looking men around you! All of them have their flaws but none of them as bad as mine! Ah… wait. Perhaps he’s the only one whose flaws are on a totally different level, but still…! (ahem, you mean Toma, right Ukyo?)
In Crowd, when being confronted by Shin one of the dialogue options will lead to UraUkyo yelling to Shin “You’re the second biggest nuisance after that damned Toma!”
The drama CDs have Toma (and all the other LI to some extent tbh) bullying Ukyo. In one of them, Toma insults Ukyo’s photography skills (and reads out bad reviews in a mocking tone), making poor Ukyo cry xD

5. His route has some of the best secondary character interactions
Ukyo’s route has the nice-but-dangerous assassin Waka, and Rika is actually MC’s friend for once o_o.
This route also has my (personal) favorite version of Shin. Shin is also amazing in Ikki’s route, but here he’s actually freaking nice (while still being himself). He smiles often, bickers with Toma like actual brothers rather than enemies, shows concern for Mine and advises her not to wear a yukata in such cold weather, defends Sawa for being slightly late even though he expressed annoyance at it initially. He also asks MC to leave quickly when she walks around near Meido no Hitsuji on her rest day, saying that it wouldn’t be good if Waka spots her and makes her help out when she should be resting. Shin also gives the most adorable smile + response ever when MC wishes him good luck in his studying. “I promise I’ll get accepted” AAAHHHH <3
The childhood friend trio interactions here are sweet and reminiscent of how friends actually act around each other (Heart and Diamond World can’t relate pfffft). Shin’s mischievous expression when he teams up with MC to tease Toma is priceless.
As for the other characters, we have Sawa being tortured by Waka and Kent, and Ikki acting like Kent’s mom in a flashback lol
Ikki: He will be working here starting today. He is Kent, please take care of him. He’s huge but he doesn’t bite, don’t worry.
Kent: Ikkyu, don’t say unnecessary things. Besides, I can introduce myself.

6. Points about his route:
- Tbh, he probably brought all that bad luck to himself by breaking MC’s mirror lol
- So many freaking bad endings… but they can pretty much be avoided simply by listening to Ukyo (the right Ukyo, I mean) - so they’re not particularly hard to dodge.
- This is from my personal playing experience, but the threshold to get the Good Ending in his route seems to be somewhat lower than the other routes. I got his Good Ending with an almost full affection bar, but the trust bar was at around 90%-ish filled. That’s still pretty high, but the other routes seem to have stricter requirements and smaller margin for error.
- You can get his Normal Ending if your parameters aren’t high enough for the Good Ending, or you can nab it along your way of getting the Good Ending. Just don’t forgive him - but why would anyone not forgive him, I seriously don’t get it (shrugs)
- You know, you could just have Toma lock MC and Ukyo up in separate cages until 26th August and avoid all this trouble. Not even UraUkyo would dare do anything to MC in Toma’s presence xD
- In his route, on some days MC has to actively seek Ukyo to raise the parameters. Unlike the other LI who MC will meet very often no matter what in their routes, Ukyo generally doesn’t come near MC unless it’s to warn her or he has to see her no matter what.
- In other routes, if MC skips out on a certain interaction with the LI it usually skips to the next scene/day. In Ukyo’s route, however, there is plenty of content even if MC doesn’t meet Ukyo. This is where you get to see all the secondary character interactions, and MC still recovers her memories of Shin + Toma and Ikki + Kent… just none of the memories of Ukyo.
- Ukyo’s constant “You shouldn’t get too close to me because I’m dangerous… ah but you should stay with me but you shouldn’t, but you should I want to see you, but no I’m dangerous” every five minutes drives me freaking crazy ARGH stop it already (flips table)
- There aren’t really choices that drop affection/trust (there are like, 1 or 2 in the whole route, but that’s it). With Ukyo, MC gains a lot of affection and trust which you can’t really drop… so if you want to achieve the Normal Ending or a particular Bad Ending, since you can’t reduce the affection/trust, you’ll have to avoid him as much as possible (i.e. don’t seek him out on days Orion ask you)
- Ukyo’s route is the only route where the title of some of his Endings are spoken by a non-LI character. His Normal Ending “Do you know Ukyo?” is spoken by Waka in the game, and his Good Ending “This time, don’t lose what’s important to you” is spoken by Nhil.
- Since from 1st till 25th August the dangers surrounding MC are amplified, it’s highly likely that the emotions of the people around her have been amplified as well, for example the jealousy and hatred from the fanclub members and Toma’s overprotective nature. In Later, after all the chaos has passed the fanclub girls come out to apologize to MC, saying they were terrified by what they did and had no idea why they would go that far even if they felt jealous of MC. Toma is pretty normal in Ukyo’s route so long as he doesn’t find out about any danger that befalls MC. Ukyo’s novel mentions him as a nice person, always being friendly with him even after knowing he was dating MC. He can still be a little scary in Later though,>! when he finds out MC had been crying because of something Ukyo did… but good thing it’s a misunderstanding.!<

7. Sequels and other media
In the sequels, his crazy side still exists, but no longer tries to harm MC since there’s no point. The subsequent games take a most light-hearted approach as the two Ukyos disagree on so many things. (UraUkyo does all the cleaning, laundry and other chores while being irritated at OmoteUkyo’s uselessness LMAO). One Ukyo is also more flirty and physical than the other super shy one… (basically, imagine having Ikki and Kent in the same body hahaha)
Also, since there are two Ukyos, that means there are two weddings… with two rings. Yeah, I’m not kidding. xD
The other LIs in his route play the “protective squad” role. They serve as comic relief and threaten to hurt Ukyo if he makes MC sad.
The structure of Ukyo’s novel is also quite different from that of the other characters. The other LI’s novels outline all the things happening in their routes (+ some additional scenes), but Ukyo’s novel focuses less on his route in the game (it still does, but there is less emphasis on it) and more on the events prior to it.
It starts out very much like a shoujo manga hahaha… (well, Ukyo is cute after all)
It describes (in full doki-doki sweetness) the time Ukyo meets MC, falls in love with her, orders 5 different drinks in the cafe out of nervousness and his confession to MC.
…Then things take a super angsty turn.
She looked like she was merely asleep. It seemed like she could just open her eyes at any moment and smile at me while calling my name. But her chest doesn’t rise and fall with her breath. As I reached out to touch her cheeks, my fingertips were trembling slightly. She will never wake up again. She will no longer call my name or smile at me ever again.
My knees felt weak and I collapsed on the spot. “Why?! Why did she have to die?!” I slammed my fist repeatedly on the floor. I didn’t feel any pain even with blood oozing from my hand. Since I don’t feel any pain, I expected this to be a dream. Yet, when I raise my head I see her lifeless form right there. I cried and screamed until my throat felt raw. Why… I didn’t want to acknowledge that I had lost her, and I curled up my body as I cried. Even with my swollen eyes and blurry vision, her death was so clear in my mind that it wouldn’t let me forget.
————————————————
An indescribable scream escapes my throat as I buried my face in her bed with my hands clasped tightly. Why did she have to die? I should’ve died instead of her. Someone please exchange my life with hers. There’s no way she should die.
“Hey, aren’t you sleeping a little too much…?” I tried talking to her, but it only made things more painful. “Hurry and wake up… you can’t keep sleeping” My vision was distorted and sobs came out.
Somebody… anybody is fine. I don’t care who it is as long as she opens her eyes once more. I didn’t use to believe in gods, demons or ghosts but from now I’ll believe anything. I’ll pray every morning if you tell me to, I’ll do it if you want me to sell my soul, I’ll even accept being cursed to death. If there is anything I can do, I will do it. Therefore, someone… anyone…
… Please, save her!!
(I skipped a few paragraphs in between because… yes, he grieved for THAT long…)
After that, he travels to multiple worlds and sees MC once more… only to find her dating another person (such as the moment with her and Shin at the beginning of this post).
A HUGE part of his novel describes his and MC’s deaths (in rather gory detail o_o), and depicts pretty much all the death-related bad endings from Ukyo’s POV (and his reactions to them) + other deaths not shown in the game. So yes, Ukyo has suffered a lot... poor thing.
Everyone gathered at the lounge of the lodge, where she sat leaning against the wall with blood pouring from her abdomen. Right next to her was Sawa, whose face was messed up with tears. Sawa must’ve been the one who screamed. When I appeared, the four men who had gathered there looked at me with piercing gazes. Shin, Toma, Ikki and Kent, the four of them kept their eyes on me, never looking away. I didn’t understand what had happened. Her face was ghostly pale with her eyes closed, and at her feet was a large knife, reflecting the light illuminating the staircase.
(What do you mean you don’t understand what happened - you killed her, dude… well, the other you... but poor Shin being questioned by the police, suspected of pushing his girlfriend off a cliff, and now said girlfriend is dead o_o)
The final chapters then describe the event of his route since it’s basically his last attempt at saving MC.

8. Personal thoughts about Ukyo’s route and character
For me, Ukyo’s route isn’t actually as scary as Toma’s. Rather, it’s more sad than scary. In his route, crazy Ukyo doesn’t really appear that often (mainly in Bad Endings and towards the end of the route) and Ukyo actually seems to have fairly good control of his other side for the most part.
Ukyo’s and Toma’s scariness differ in that Ukyo resorts to outright brutal violence and murder, while Toma’s is more psychological. I touched on why a lot of people seem more terrified by Toma than Ukyo in Toma’s analysis.
Nevertheless, Ukyo’s route is pretty balanced compared to the other routes. It’s quite heavy but has aspects of comedy, romance, mystery and horror in fairly equal doses. The other routes lean more heavily to a certain genre but in this route you’ll find just as many funny moments as sad ones.
Character-wise, I can see why he is appealing to a lot of people. When he’s not crazy he’s very sweet and emotional. He’s willing to do so much in the name of love. Self-sacrifice is a major theme in his story and character - good for him that he finally has his wish fulfilled~
Personally, to me he’s more like a child (it’s weird, I know) rather than a love interest so I don’t see him as a romantic option but more in an awwwwwwww kind of way ^_^
TLDR: Ukyo is a… sweet cup of… kale green tea.
Another bonus, featuring the two Ukyo’s - one as Snow White and the other as the Witch

2020.10.15 00:16 AndyJPuente Biggest 2020 NBA free-agency, draft and trade decisions for the Sacramento Kings:

Source: https://www.espn.com/nba/insidestory/_/id/28953850/biggest-2020-nba-free-agency-draft-trade-decisions-all-30-teams
Offseason focus
Draft assets
Cap space breakdown
Team needs
Extension eligible: De'Aaron Fox (rookie) and Nemanja Bjelica
Free-agent status

The restricted free agency of Bogdan Bogdanovic

Although he was drafted in the first round, Bogdanovic enters free agency a year earlier than a player signed to a four-year rookie scale contract.
The quirk in the CBA rules allows a team and player to negotiate a non-rookie scale contract three years after that player was drafted. In this case, Bogdanovic signed a three-year, $27 million contract in 2017, three years after he was selected by Phoenix in the first round.
Of course, from another perspective, he is entering free agency six years after being drafted. The free agency of Bogdanovic is especially unusual because he is five years older than most restricted free agents and has a more consistent body of work from his three years in Sacramento and playing internationally before.
Sacramento or a team with cap space would be signing an established player in the prime of his career.
Bogdanovic has already passed on a starting salary of $11.4 million in year one. He will have the $10.6 million, one-year qualifying offer to fall back on if the Kings elect to play hardball and a team with cap space doesn't materialize.
Unlike during the regular season, when Sacramento was limited to offering no more than a four-year, $50 million extension, the team can go up to five years and 25% of the cap in year one.
The question remains if Sacramento will take an aggressive approach or let the guard shop for an offer from another team.
Atlanta, Charlotte, Detroit, Miami, New York and possibly Phoenix will have cap space.
A contract that will benefit both sides is in the range of four years for a total of $64 million.
The $16 million per year cap hit would give Bogdanovic a raise of $7 million per year from his previous contract and allow the Kings to have enough financial flexibility to build out the roster, stay under the luxury tax and still work on a possible extension for De'Aaron Fox.

The De'Aaron Fox rookie extension

The $24.9 million salary in the first year of teammate Buddy Hield's extension set the bar when it comes to Fox. At the minimum, a new contract for the point guard should start at $25 million.
But Fox and his agent, Chris Gaston, should use not Hield's contract as a measuring stick but the five-year, $166 million max contract Jamal Murray signed with the Denver Nuggets last July. The contract also had All-NBA language that would see the total compensation increase.
For comparison, we ranked Fox at No. 15 in our most recent 25-under-25 rankings, while Murray was tied for No. 18. The Kings could point out that Murray has led the Nuggets to back-to-back playoff appearances, but clearly Denver has had a better roster around its young point guard as well as more coaching stability over the past three years.
Fox ranks third among guards in points in the paint (behind Ben Simmons and Luka Doncic) and has shot 54% on 2-point field goal attempts.
Waiting to sign their exciting young point guard to preserve cap flexibility for 2021 would actually do little for the Kings financially and even less from a PR perspective. Because Fox was selected in the top five of the draft, he carries a $24.3 million cap hold, only $5.2 million less than a projected salary of $29.5 million.
Even with Fox on a max contract and Bogdanovic's cap hit at $16 million, the Kings would be projected to have more than $35 million in cap space in 2021. And playing hardball could become a public relations nightmare, especially with a player that wants to be in Sacramento.
"I want to be here," Fox told the media before the restart of the season. "Obviously, I want to win, but I want to do it here. It's been, what, 13, 14 years since the last time the Kings made the playoffs? I want to be a part of the first one.
"Obviously, we all want to win. There are some things we know we need to work on as a team, and I'm here for that. I want to be able to get to the playoffs with this team, and, hopefully, when I'm a veteran in this league, be able to be a (championship) contender."
The Hield negotiations stalled for more than four months and did not get finalized until the 11th hour. We will see if it takes that long for a Fox extension.

Offseason cap breakdown

Despite only $89 million of guaranteed contracts, Sacramento is over the projected $109.1 million salary cap.
The Kings have $28 million tied up in the non-guaranteed contract of Nemanja Bjelica, the free-agent hold of Bogdan Bogdanovic and their first-round pick.
The maximum room that Sacramento could have is $12 million, but at the cost of Bjelica and Bogdanovic.
Expect the Kings to have the $9.3 million midlevel and $3.6 million biannual exceptions.

Resources available to build the roster

Dates to watch

• The Kings will likely guarantee the $7.15 million contract of starting power forward Nemanja Bjelica, Waiving Bjelica would not give Sacramento cap flexibility to sign a replacement player. His contract has no salary protection and will become guaranteed the day prior to the start of free agency.
• Expect Jabari Parker to opt into his $6.5 million contract before the start of free agency. After averaging 15 points in 32 games in Atlanta, Parker missed 22 games with a right shoulder injury and has appeared in only one game with the Kings. Given so few teams will have cap space, the market for Parker would project to be closer to $5 million.
• The Kings will tender Bogdan Bogdanovic a $10.6 million qualifying offer by the day before free agency begins, which will make the guard a restricted free agent, allowing Sacramento to match an offer sheet.

Restrictions

• The Kings will likely regret the decision to decline the fourth-year team option for Harry Giles. Because the option was declined, the Kings are restricted to paying Giles no more than $3.97 million -- the amount of his salary in 2020-21 if the option had been exercised.
Giles missed his entire rookie season rehabbing both knees and missed eight games this season with a sore knee. But after Feb. 1, Giles averaged 22 minutes, 11.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists and shown potential as one the better-passing bigs.
Giles could sign a one-year, $3.97 million contract with the Kings and restore full Bird rights in the summer of 2021. The market for the 22-year-old projects to be in the $5-6 million per year range.
• Because the Bjelica contract is non-guaranteed, his outgoing salary counts as $0 in a trade. If the Kings amend his contract by the day prior to the start of free agency, the contract would count as full $7.15 million in a trade.
• Buddy Hield has a poison pill restriction that will be lifted the first day of free agency. Until then, for trade purposes, Hield counts as $19.7 million as incoming salary for a team acquiring him and $4.9 million as outgoing salary.

Extension candidates

The Kings have two extension-eligible players: Fox and Bjelica.
While there is a deadline of the day before the first 2020-21 regular season game on a Fox new contract, Sacramento has until June 30, 2021 to extend Bjelica. The 31-year old forward can be extended for an additional four seasons and up to $54 million total.
Despite significant pay raises on the horizon for Fox and Bogdanovic, the Kings do have the financial flexibility to afford a Bjelica contract in 2021 that would start at $10 million.

The draft assets

Here's how ESPN's Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz have Sacramento selecting in November:
After not having their own first-round pick last year (traded to Philadelphia and eventually to the Celtics), the Kings are projected to select late in the lottery. Sacramento also has three draft picks in the second round.
The Kings own all their future first-round picks.

Offseason focus
Draft assets
Cap space breakdown
Team needs
Extension eligible: Isaac Bonga and John Wall
Free-agent status

Job 1: Block out the Bradley Beal trade noise

The trade speculation will begin again this offseason, as Beal, still only 27 years old, is the player who would bring back the most if Washington were willing to move him. The Wizards are a lottery team for the second straight year, and they've focused a lot of their attention on the future, with six rotation players age 23 or under, and several other young players in the pipeline. Does that mean the Wizards would be better off moving Beal now to maximize his value?
After signing an extension last October, Beal is under contract through 2022-23 (with a player option for that season). Any team acquiring him would have him for at a minimum of two seasons, a rarity for an All-Star like Beal. While a trade, in theory, might be a tempting prospect for both the Wizards and Beal -- giving the Wizards future value and Beal a chance to play for a contender -- he should be part of the solution in Washington, as he seems ready to be.
"I have an organization who basically gave me the keys," Beal said on the Lowe Post podcast in April. "'We're going to build around you. We're going to get guys around.' If I go anywhere else, granted, it may be a good team, but I would be a piece. Who knows if my role would be the same? My role here is, I love what it is. I love [Scott] Brooks. I love what we have. I love our young guys. I think the fact that we actually have guys that are committed to getting better."
There is also the relationship Beal has built with Wall after some rockier times, and the opportunity that awaits when the point guard returns.
"We were close way before I even got into the league," Beal said of Wall. "Even now, he's a big brother to me. He's taken me under his wing since day one. We're still like that to this day. We're both alpha dogs. We both feel like we're winners. We both want to take the shot at the end of the game. That's just how we are. At the end of the day, I think we both trust each other. I know I wouldn't be who I am without him and he wouldn't be part of who he is without me either. I think we both have that understanding."
Granted, Beal could wake up in mid-October and ask out if he sees the future in Washington as a dead end. For now, Beal and the Wizards need to block out the noise when it comes to trade speculation.

Job 2: Get John Wall back on the floor

Two years ago, I wrote about Wall's contract, an eyesore that one executive with another team called "the toughest contract I have seen a team try to move in 20 years."
The season before, Wall had played only 41 games. One concern then, which has been realized, was that Wall's body appeared to be breaking down -- after knee, heel and Achilles injuries -- before his $171 million super-max extension even began. That contract finally kicked in this season, and it has $41.2, $44.3 and $47.4 million remaining for the next three seasons.
In May, after more than two years off the court, Wall declared himself "healthy ... 110%."
If that's the case, Wall will play a role in both the Wizards' attempt to return to perennial playoff contender status and their decision about Beal.
Wall was once a durable player who missed only 12 games in four seasons and made All-NBA third team and five All-Star games. He'll turn 30 soon, but the Wizards can hope that he's regained some of his world-class athleticism and they'll be able to reteam their All-Stars in the backcourt.

Job 3: Bring back free agent Davis Bertans at a reasonable price

In his first season with Washington, Bertans averaged 15.4 points per game with 42.4% shooting on 3s. Though he played the sixth-man role, he was by far the Wizards' most effective player, according to ESPN's real plus-minus.
That strong performance leads to the downside of Washington's Bertans trade last July with San Antonio: The forward will enter the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.
Although Bertans will have suitors, the group of teams with cap space -- Atlanta, Charlotte, Detroit, Miami, New York and Phoenix -- is smaller than in previous years.
In any case, Bertans' starting salary for 2020-21 is likely to at least double his current $7 million salary. Will a team be willing to sign him for a contract starting north of $16 million? That's one question Washington must try to answer.
For comparison, here is a list of players who were primarily bench players this season and paid more than $16 million: Gorgui Dieng, Bismack Biyombo, Andre Iguodala, Evan Turner, Jeff Teague, Goran Dragic, Kent Bazemore and Nicolas Batum.
With that backdrop, Washington must decide how to approach contract talk with Bertans. Do they treat him like a restricted free agent and allow him to shop for an offer with another team to set the price? Or do the Wizards take an aggressive approach to bring back Bertans on October 18, the first day of free-agent negotiations?
The problem with the conservative approach is that Washington is not projected to have cap space for the next three seasons and would not have the flexibility to replace Bertans with a similar player.

Offseason cap breakdown

Notes

Resources available to build the roster

Dates to watch

• Washington has two players -- Isaac Bonga and Anzejs Pasecniks -- on partial or non-guaranteed contracts. The $1.7 million Bonga contract becomes guaranteed on Oct. 17. Pasceniks has $200,000 of salary protection that increases to $1.5 million if he is not waived by October 26.

Restrictions

• The Wizards sent $1.1 million to New Orleans in a previous trade and have $4.5 million cash to send out prior to Oct. 19.
• The Bonga and Pasecniks contracts have no trade value since there is no salary protection.
• Both Bradley Beal and John Wall have 15% trade kickers. The Beal trade bonus is valued at $9.5 million and would be divided over three years (if traded before Oct. 19) or two seasons if traded after. The amount of the bonus could decrease if the salary cap comes in below $109 million. The Wall bonus is voided since it would exceed the maximum salary allowed.

Extension candidates

• Wall and Bonga are the only players on the roster that are extension eligible. It is unlikely that either player will receive a new contract.

The Wizards have all their own first-round picks.

Assessing the roster

One year removed from its Western Conference finals appearance, the team with the league's highest payroll did not advance past the first round.
It's easy to assume that the roster has reached its ceiling, but the Trail Blazers can return their core players -- with some minor tweaks -- and compete for a top-four seed in the Western Conference.
Here is why:
1. Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum
Lillard is untouchable -- and not because of the $196 million supermax contract that starts in 2021-22. The five-time All-Star recently turned 30 and is under contract through 2024-25. Lillard told The Undefeated's Marc Spears in December that he wants to be in Portland, much as Dirk Nowitzki stayed in Dallas for his entire career.
"He just stayed with it," Lillard said. "I respect what Dirk did. Like, I see that and I'm like, 'It'll be worth it. I know it was worth it for him,' you know what I'm saying? Like, he'll be forever, ever, ever respected in Dallas and in the league. So that's like what I see from myself."
"They allow me to be like the best version of myself as a player," Lillard said. "They support me in the stuff that I do off the court. So why am I looking for a different situation?"
The Trail Blazers owe $29.3 million to McCollum next season. Via trade, they could choose to break that money up and acquire three role players and perhaps draft picks, but why would they? McCollum, at 28 (almost 29), is in the prime of his career and signed an extension last year that keeps him in Portland through 2023-24. He's averaged 20-plus points per game in five consecutive seasons.
2. Jusuf Nurkic
Nurkic has fully recovered from a fractured left tibia that sidelined him for 91 games over the past two seasons. The 25-year-old averaged 17.6 points and 10.2 rebounds in 31.6 minutes in eight seeding games.
He is under contract through the 2021-22 season with a team-friendly cap hit of $12.9 and $12.0 million, and the second year has only $4 million guaranteed. His contract ranks near the bottom among starting center salaries in the NBA.
3. The young foundation
Instead of building out the bench and finding a starter in free agency, Portland has turned to drafting and developing -- a result of the financial restrictions placed on the roster because of the luxury tax the past two seasons.
Former lottery pick Zach Collins went from averaging 15.8 minutes his rookie season to playing 26.4 minutes and starting all 12 games before his season was ended by injury. Gary Trent Jr. went from playing in only 15 games his rookie season to becoming a valuable role player off the bench, averaging 20.4 minutes (up from 7.4), and 8.0 points in 55 games with 41% shooting from 3.
Although Anfernee Simons was not part of the rotation in the seeding games, the guard is only 21 years old and appeared in 65 regular-season games (with four starts) this year. The Trail Blazers also have 20-year-old Nassir Little, their 2019 first-round pick.
4. The return of Rodney Hood
Hood was shooting 49.3% on 3s when he tore his left Achilles in early December. Eight months after surgery, the small forward is determined to get back on the court.
"Once you start to move and run a little bit, the confidence comes back, and then it's just a matter of time before you come back to be yourself. I'm determined to get back to myself and continue to play good basketball," Hood told ESPN's Eric Woodyard in June.
Hood has a $6 million player option, which he will likely exercise, and should benefit from the delayed start to next season.
5. The expiring contract of Trevor Ariza
In 32 games with Sacramento, Ariza shot 38.8% from the field and averaged six points per game. He missed seven games because of a groin injury and had four DNPs. Ariza resurrected his season with Portland, averaging 33.4 minutes on 21 starts, 11 points and 49.1% from the field and 40% from 3 before opting out of the restart.
Ariza has a $12.8 million contract that becomes guaranteed if he is on the roster past Oct. 18. Kent Bazemore is proof that Portland is not afraid to flip an expiring contract for players with years left on their contract.
6. Their own free agents
Nurkic's return raises questions about Whiteside's role. Whiteside put together one of his most efficient seasons as Nurkic missed 61 games, averaging 16.3 points on 61.8% from the field and 14.2 rebounds.
Whiteside has Bird rights and Portland can exceed the cap to sign him. His salary for next year projects to be the $9-10 million range.
There is no denying that the Carmelo Anthony signing last November benefited both sides. Anthony filled a void left open when Zach Collins was injured. After starting at power forward in the regular season, Anthony switched back to small forward in the restart games, averaging 16.5 points on 46.9% from 3.
Lillard commended the forward for hitting two big shots and making a defensive stop in the closing minutes against Houston.
"He understands what we need from him in certain situations, depending on how the game is going," Lillard said. "It's obvious to somebody like me that pays attention to everything. I find it real funny and disrespectful how people speak on him. He's a Hall of Famer."
Because he was on a one-year contract, Portland can offer Anthony a starting salary of $3.0 million, the $3.6 million biannual exception or use part of their $9.3 million midlevel exception.

The extension options: Zach Collins and Gary Trent Jr.

When it comes to extending a non-max young player with a year left on his contract, one common approach for teams is to avoid a new contract and preserve cap space for the following season. Often teams let the contract play out and wait for the player to become a restricted free agent.
The Trail Blazers' cap ledger in 2021-22 allows them to take a more proactive approach with Collins and Trent this offseason. Portland is right at the salary cap with both players' free-agent holds ($16.2 million for Collins and $2.1 million for Trent), the $74.5 million owed to Lillard and McCollum, Nurkic's $12 million contract ($4 million guaranteed), their 2020 and 2021 first-round picks and the salaries of Simons and Little.
Considering that Collins is only 22, averaged 16 minutes his first two seasons and missed all but three regular-season games (not including the eight seeding games in Orlando) this year because of a shoulder injury, the Trail Blazers would be buying future stock with an extension.
This would be comparable to the approach San Antonio took with Dejounte Murray. Murray averaged 8.5 minutes his rookie year, 21.5 in his second season and missed all of the 2018-19 season with a knee injury. The Spurs considered the 23-year-old to be their point guard of the future and signed him to a four-year, $64 million extension last October.
Not getting drafted in the first round is likely going to benefit Trent financially. He signed a three-year contract and not the standard four-year rookie scale for players selected in the first round, so Trent is now eligible to sign an extension this offseason.
In the seeding games and playoffs, Trent averaged 16.9 points, shooting 50.7% from 3. Portland should offer the maximum allowed: four years, $51 million.

Offseason cap breakdown

A luxury tax payer the past two seasons -- with a combined $20 million penalty -- Portland finds itself below the threshold this offseason.
If the Trail Blazers remove all their free-agent holds, they are right above the $109.1 million projected salary cap.
In terms of the tax, Portland does have financial flexibility with the $12.8 million ($1.8 million guaranteed) contract of Ariza. Waiving the veteran would not give them cap space.
If Ariza is not waived and the luxury tax line stays at $132.7 million -- the same as in 2019-20 -- Portland is $22 million below the luxury tax.

Dates to watch

Extension candidates

Along with Trent Jr. and Collins, Nurkic is also extension eligible. Because $4 million of his 2021-22 contract is guaranteed, Portland would need to guarantee the balance of $8 million if they were to extend him. The most Portland can extend him is for an additional three years and $46.5 million.

Portland has all of its own first-round selections.

2020.10.14 20:48 lasmalvinassoningles Greatest Prime Minister of All Time Round 1 Match 1: The Earl of Chatham v. Ramsay MacDonald

My post yesterday got lots of enthusiasm, so let's crack on with the tournament! First I should give due credit, I was inspired by a post on moderatepolitics running a similar contest for US Presidents. Obviously it will be much better with British Prime Ministers.
Also, while we're here, there are a lot of early round matches to get through. In the interests of time I propose either running two matches together each week, or shortening the voting time to something like 3 or 4 days instead of a full week. I'm also considering if we should do a "Worst of" contest in parallel, which the first round losers would get entered into.
The opening match sees two men in the ring from two very different eras. The first contender is The Earl of Chatham, aka William Pitt the Elder, coming all the way from 1766. In the other corner we have Ramsay MacDonald, first elected prime minister in 1924. Two men enter, only one can leave. The one who does will face the first ever prime minister, Robert Walpole, in the next round.

Name William Pitt 'the Elder', 1st Earl of Chatham James Ramsay MacDonald
Birth 15 November 1708, Westminster, Middlesex 12 October 1866, Lossiemouth, Morayshire
Death 11 May 1778, Hayes, Kent 9 November 1937, Atlantic Ocean (onboard Reina del Pacifico)
Party Whigs) Labour), National Labour
Dates in Power 30 July 1766 – 14 October 1768 22 January 1924 – 4 November 1924 , 5 June 1929 – 7 June 1935
Monarch George III George V
Education Eton, Oxford, Utrecht Birkbeck, University of London
Career Before Becoming Prime Minister Although he was not officially prime minister until 1766, he held most of the power in government during the Seven Years' War. This war saw the defeat of France, the conquest of Canada) and the rise of Britain as the predominant imperial power. One of three founders of the Labour party in 1900. He famously opposed British involvement in WWI, for which he was accused of cowardice and treason, but overcame this to become Labour leader in 1922.
Elections Fought as Leader 1768 1923, 1924, 1929, 1931, 1935
Notable Events While In Power Aftermath of the Seven Years' War Interwar period, Great Depression
Major Policies Most of his major achievements occurred before he was officially prime minister. While in office he suffered from illness and mental decline and had few clear policy goals or achievements. His poor health led to his resignation in 1768. He led a minority Labour government (the first) in 1924, but lost power after just nine months. In 1929 he returned to power, again with a minority government. He generally focused on improving conditions for the unemployed, poor and miners. Due to the Great Depression, he formed a National Government) with support of the Conservatives and Liberals, but without Labour. This was seen as a betrayal by Labour and he was expelled from the party. The national government) abandoned the gold standard, ended free trade, raised taxes, made budget cuts and ignored Germany's rearmament in the early 1930s.
Random Fact The US city of Pittsburgh was named after him after its capture in the Seven Years' War. He had the largest majority of any prime minister ever, holding 554 seats following the 1931 election. Only 13 of those were from his own party.
Which of these two prime ministers was greater? Cast your vote here!
Polls will stay open until at least Sunday.

Extension eligible: Anthony Davis, LeBron James and Kyle Kuzma (rookie)
Free-agent status

The Anthony Davis contract

The Lakers' acquisition of Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans was high risk, high reward.
Here is the price tag:
Adding to the risk: Davis could opt to become a 2020 free agent. With potential free agency looming for both Davis (in 2020 or 2021) and James (2021 or 2022), there would be no guarantee that either player would be on the roster for the 2022-23 season. In that case, both the Lakers' roster and their stock of draft picks would be bereft.
But as Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka told ESPN's Dave McMenamin, when James committed to the Lakers in 2018, it was Pelinka's job to put a championship roster around James even if that meant trading away draft picks and young players.
"When a player of LeBron's stature puts his trust in the organization," Pelinka said, "I think there's an implicit bilateral trust going back, saying: 'We're going to do everything we can to put you in a position to win more championships, because that's what you're about.'"
Fortunately for Los Angeles, Davis put together his most complete season, racking up honors along the way: being named first-team All-NBA and first-team All-Defensive, and finishing second in Defensive Player of the Year voting and fifth in MVP voting.
Furthermore, the risk of the Davis trade is now largely canceled out by the ultimate reward: an NBA championship.
Still, Davis is all but certain to opt out of his $28.8 million contract for 2020-21.
The decision would be financially motivated and not an indication that Davis will look elsewhere when free agency begins. There is no reason to believe Davis would spurn the chance to win another championship with the Lakers to sign with a lottery team such as Atlanta, Detroit or New York -- the three teams projected to have cap space for a maximum-salary player such as Davis.
The opportunity Davis would be taking advantage of is getting a raise for next season and establishing security. If the salary cap stays at $109.1 million, he can receive $32.7 million next season rather than the $28.8 million on his current contract.
Beyond that, Davis and his agent, Rich Paul, will make a decision on the length of his next contract. Here are three ways for them to go:

The LeBron James extension

James continues to produce at an MVP level at age 35.
Instead of seeing a deterioration in his overall game 17 seasons in his NBA career, James continues to produce at not just an All-Star level, but an All-NBA and MVP clip.
James also is arguably the most durable star in the league. Since entering the NBA in 2003-04, James has played in 92.5% of regular-season games.
James still has two years left on his contract (at $39.2 and $41.0 million) but is eligible to receive an extension.
Because of the over-38 rule, the Lakers can extend him for only two seasons beyond 2021-22. (This assumes his player option for 2021-22 is removed, keeping him in Los Angeles.) The max salary under current expectations would be $43.0 and $46.5 million.
The extension would start in 2022-23.

The roster outside of LeBron and AD

A year ago, the Lakers could have handed out name tags when training camp started.
Los Angeles had signed, drafted or traded for 10 new players and three more who were returning. Only James and Kyle Kuzma were not part of the transaction game.
Now, heading into the offseason, the focus for Pelinka is on roster maintenance. The Lakers have 11 players under contract and are over the salary cap.
Besides the possible extensions for Davis and James, here is the menu of roster options (and decisions) facing the Lakers:

The player options

Including Davis, the Lakers have four players -- Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ($8.5 million), Avery Bradley ($5.0 million), JaVale McGee ($4.2 million) and Rajon Rondo ($2.7 million) -- with a player option for 2020-21.
One tendency in these situations is for role players to capitalize on the championship by entering free agency in search of a bigger payday. But this year, that appears less likely because there will probably be less spending this offseason.
Here is the available money:
  1. Cap space of $15 million-plus: Four teams
  2. $9.3 million midlevel exception: 20 teams
  3. $3.6 million biannual exception: 15 teams
  4. $5.7 million tax midlevel exception: Five teams
For some teams, such as Houston and Milwaukee, spending more than $5.7 million of their midlevel exception would impose a hard cap. Teams that rely on revenue sharing -- such as Indiana, Memphis and New Orleans -- could also be reluctant to use the full midlevel exception.
Because Caldwell-Pope has been on the Lakers' roster the past three seasons (without changing teams), he has established Bird rights. If he elects to opt out, the Lakers can sign him for up to 30% of the cap and a total of five years. The salary range for him outside of the Lakers would be $8 million to $9 million, similar to his 2020-21 player option.
Rondo and McGee have early Bird rights (allowing them 175% of their salary from the previous season or the average player salary), but the Lakers would have to commit a minimum of two years (not including an option) if they use the exception. The Lakers could sign them (and Avery Bradley) with the non-Bird rights exception and give each player a 120% raise from his 2019-20 salary.
In the case of Rondo, the maximum the Lakers could sign him for is $3 million -- a $300,000 increase from his 2020-21 player option.
In the unlikely scenario that all four players opt out and sign elsewhere, the Lakers would still not have cap space and would have only the $9.3 million midlevel, $3.6 million biannual and minimum exceptions to replace them.

Their own free agents

The Lakers' four free agents -- Markieff Morris, Jared Dudley, Dwight Howard and Dion Waiters -- signed one-year contracts and have non-Bird rights. The Lakers can sign each player to a maximum of $3 million without dipping into their midlevel or biannual exceptions.
JR Smith was signed as a substitute player, and the Lakers are allowed to sign him to the $2.7 million minimum exception.

The exceptions

The Lakers will have three roster spots (or four, if Quinn Cook is waived) open to use for their $9.3 million midlevel and $3.6 million biannual exceptions.
Using both exceptions and waiving Cook would put Los Angeles right at the projected $132.7 million luxury tax line.
Beyond Morris and Howard, here are some available names to keep an eye on:

The 2021 offseason

Next year, the Lakers could have nine free agents without having all that much flexibility.
If the roster remains intact, the Lakers might head into next offseason with only James, Davis and their 2020 first-round pick on the roster. Kuzma will be a restricted free agent.
Even with only three players under contract, the maximum money they'll have to spend if the cap stays flat at $109.1 million is $17.5 million. That number would include renouncing the free-agent hold of Kuzma.

Offseason cap breakdown

The resources available to build the roster

  2. Cash to send out and receive in a trade
  3. Exceptions: $9.3 million midlevel and $3.6 million biannual

Extension candidates

The decision on a Kuzma extension comes down to three factors:
  1. What is the value of preserving cap flexibility in 2021?
  2. Do the Lakers view him as part of the future?
  3. What is the value of Kuzma on the trade market?
If he is not extended, the forward will carry a $10.7 million free-agent cap hold in 2021. An extension for Kuzma decreases the Lakers' cap space next offseason. It also likely takes a potential trade of Kuzma off the table because of the poison pill restriction that would be in his contract.
Related note: Since 2016, only four players -- Larry Nance Jr., Justise Winslow, T.J. Warren and Taurean Prince -- have signed a rookie extension with a starting salary of $13 million or less, which is the category in which Kuzma would likely belong.

The draft assets

As covered above, the Lakers sent a bounty of draft assets to New Orleans in the Davis trade. They do have their own first-round pick in November and will likely retain their first in 2021.
Here's how ESPN's Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz have Miami selecting in the draft:
The Lakers have their own second-round picks starting in 2023.

2020.10.13 22:46 cincbus Introducing: The Spanish Royal Family

Royal Family Twitter: u/CasaReal
King Alfonso III (1886-1941)
Gonna go back one more generation than usual to start this wild ride.
Alfonso the III's father, Alfonso XII, died while his mother was pregnant with him, thus he was King upon his birth in 1886. She served as regent until his 16th birthday when he assumed full authority as King. After a series of poor choices, he aligned his fortunes to the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, who fell from power in 1930. Municipal elections in 1931 resulted in a landslide victory for the Republican and Socialist parties, and they demanded the King abdicate the throne. The King went into exile but refused to abdicate.
While exiled, his eldest son, Alfonso, renounced his right to the throne to marry a commoner.
His second son, Jaime, renounced his rights to the throne because he was deaf.
This left his third son, Juan, as heir apparent. In 1947, General Francisco Franco declared Spain a monarchy yet again, calling it a “restoration”. However, he did not trust Juan as heir. As a result, in 1969, his son, Juan Carlos, was selected as King.
King Juan Carlos I (b. 1938) (abdicated)
Juan Carlos is the grandson of Alfonso XIII, the last king of Spain before the monarchy was abolished in 1931. He was born in exile in Rome, however was allowed back to Spain in 1948 to be further educated there. He joined the army, completing his officer training from 1955-1957. Afterwards, he spent time in both the naval school and the air force school, and later studied law, international political economy and public finance at the University of Madrid.
He was selected to be King of Spain over his father, Juan, by General Franco.
So, why did Franco bring back the monarchy? I found this answer online:
“We’re accustomed to believing a tyrant like Franco could do anything he wanted. Yet, in reality, his options were very limited, amounting to:
a) Do nothing OR appoint another military strongman to take his place.
b) Restore the republic.
c) Restore the monarchy.
There really are no further choices. Regarding (a), Franco was well aware that dictatorships are little more than the cult surrounding the person of the dictator, who is unable to transfer the cult to any 3rd party. So, a dead dictator equates to a dead dictatorhip, perhaps not immediately but before very long the ‘Franco Regime Without Franco’ was bound to implode. Franco accepted this to be an awkward truth, but he swallowed the bitter pill nonetheless.
Option (b) was never in the cards — Franco detested the Republic he fought to unseat and never even considered bring one back to govern Spain post-mortem.
That only leaves option (c). For Franco, the issue was not Monarchy Vs. Republic but rather (i) what sort of monarchy, and (ii.) incarnated by whom? The choices might seem straight-forward, but reality was rather complex since the legitimate heir to the throne (Juan de Bourbon, Count of Barcelona) was a man with whom Franco agreed on practically nothing. The Count of Barcelona made his political philosophies publicly know in the so-called Laussane Manifesto (Mar, 1945), the contents of which were diametrically opposed to the Franco Regime on practically all matters of importance.
Hence, in ’47 Franco did the only thing he regarded as workable — restoring the monarchy in theory but leaving the throne vacant, pending an eventual nomination to fill the seat. The temporary vacancy last 22 years when the Count’s son (Juan Carlos I) was officially designated as heir to the dual roles of head-of-state & commander-in-chief of the armed forces.”
Furthermore, Franco disliked Juan (father of Juan Carlos), whom he suspected of being an Anglophile (Franco despised the British and referred to Great Britain as “perfidious Albion”); he was also determined to be the sole arbiter of Spain’s destiny. And so he was. For the next thirty-six years, Franco remained the country’s unchallenged caudillo, or strongman, and although he declared Spain a monarchy once again, in 1947, he kept the throne empty, leaving Don Juan to languish and fret in neighboring Portugal, even as Franco himself assumed the role of dispenser of noble titles.
In a cruelly Shakespearean twist, Franco asked Don Juan to send him his son, Juan Carlos, who was then ten, to be educated and groomed under Franco’s supervision. In 1969, when Juan Carlos was thirty-one, Franco summoned him and informed the young man of his decision to make him his successor, with the title of King of Spain . (Excerpt from this article)
Juan Carlos met and consulted with Franco many times, standing next to him at ceremonies, publicly supporting his regime, and praising his government. Franco gave full control to Juan Carlos 3 weeks before his death in 1975. Juan Carlo’s position was further legitimized on 1977 when his father formally renounced his claim to the throne.
On paper, Juan Carlos retained fairly extensive reserve powers. He was the guardian of the Constitution and was responsible for ensuring that it was obeyed. In practice, since the passage of the Constitution (and especially since 1982), he took a mostly non-partisan and representative role, acting almost entirely on the advice of the government.
Juan Carlos enjoyed extreme popularity in Spain for many years until multiple scandals (detailed below) were made public about him and his family. As a result, he abdicated the throne on behalf of his son.
Coup D'Etat
Ever since the dictator Francisco Franco had died in 1975, Spain had been changing at the speed of light. Democratic reform was the watchword of the decade, and each reform came one after the other. King Juan Carlos had handed power to parliament and instituted a new constitution. It was all way too fast for Spain's conservatives. According to history.com, it came to a head on February 23, 1981. Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero led 200 members of the civil guard in invading the Cortes, Spain's legislature building. They fired shots in the air and took the parliament hostage.
Spaniards were glued to their television sets for 18 hours as the band of civil guards held the Cortes. King Juan Carlos appealed to the Spanish army to condemn these renegades and affirm their loyalty to the new constitution. The army did and the bandits had to retreat in shame, thus preserving Spain's democracy.
Shooting of Little Brother
In 1956, at age 18, he shot his younger brother Alfonso in the head while the two were playing with a revolver. He has maintained throughout his life that it was an accident, however Alfonso passed away as a result of his injuries.
The financial scandal
Juan Carlos’s daughter, Princess Cristina, is married to Inaki Urdangarin. Urdangarin and his ex-business associate, Diego Torres, were the leading figures in the Nóos Institute, a non-profit that secured no-bid contracts from the regional governments of Valencia and the Balearic Islands using Urdangarin’s influence.Urdangarin and Torres also used their non-profit to divert around €6.2 million from public contracts secured for organizing sports events into private accounts. Urdangarin’s wife, Cristina de Borbón, sat on the board of a company, Aizoon, that was allegedly used to channel part of these funds. She was made to testify in the case, and was ultimately fined for having benefited from her husband’s scheme, but was acquitted of tax fraud complicity.
In June 2018 he was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in prison; he is currently imprisoned in Ávila.
The hunting trip
In 2012 the King injured himself on an elephant hunting trip in Botswana. At a time when Spainairds were suffering from a lagging economy, this trip was viewed as obscene in terms of expenses and extravagance. Spain’s unemployment was at 23%, and nearly 50% for young workers. To make matters worse, he was the honorary president of the Spanish branch of the World Wildlife Fund.
The public was only made aware of the trip because the King was injured and had to be helicoptered from the scene. Even worse - his mistress was there with him.
Abdication
In 2014 Juan Carlos announced his plans to abdicate the throne in favor of his son, Felipe.
Post-Abdication Scandals
More recently, it emerged that Juan Carlos had accepted a previously undeclared “gift” of a hundred million dollars from Saudi Arabia’s late King Abdullah—allegedly a bribe in return for his help in arranging a lucrative fast-rail-construction contract.
Further roiling the public, one of Juan Carlos’s former lovers, a Danish-born events organizer named Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein—who had accompanied him on his Botswana safari—has acknowledged that Juan Carlos had given her, some years ago, sixty-five million euros (worth about eighty-four million dollars at the time). This “gift” is believed to have come out of the funds given to Juan Carlos by King Abdullah.
The latest bombshell shaking the royal house involves secret audio recordings of princess Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, a German aristocrat living in Monte Carlo who for years has been romantically linked to the 80-year-old former king and now accuses him of using her name to buy property in Morocco, of accumulating a secret fortune hidden in several Swiss bank accounts under the name of one of his cousins, Alvaro d'Orleans Bourbon, of using fake cut-outs to commit tax fraud and of taking millions in commissions on state contracts.
As a result, the current King Felipe announced he would renounce his personal inheritance from his father and that his father would no longer receive a royal allowance. Afterwards, Juan Carlos vanished.
Exile
In August of this year (2020), Juan Carlos sent a public letter to King Felipe VI, saying that he would be leaving the country due to “the public repercussions that certain past events in [his] private life are generating.” Later reports speculated that he had either gone to Portugal, where his father, Don Juan de Borbón, lived in exile for part of his life, or to the Dominican Republic, which he has visited multiple times. It’s a sign that the figurehead of Spanish democracy understands that he has endangered his legacy—and the monarchy itself.
It has not been published where Juan Carlos is currently living, however photos have been obtained that appear to show Juan Carlos disembarking a plane in Abu Dhabi.

Marriage:
Juan Carlos married Princess Sofia of Greece and Denmark, daughter of the King of Greece in 1962. In an effort for young, suitable European royals to meet and mingle (and also to boost tourism in Greece), Sophia’s mother arranged a Mediterranean cruise on the Greek yacht Agamemnon in 1954. Several teenaged and twenty-something royals were invited on the trip touring a handful of Greek islands. Juan Carlos and Sofia were among the young royals on the cruise.
They met up at additional weddings and events over the next several years, and were officially reunited in Rome at the 1960 Olympic Games. The Greek royal family held a dinner for the Spanish guests onboard their ship, Polemistis. Following the Olympics, Juan Carlos and his family were invited to spend Christmas 1960 in Greece.
In 1961, Sofia traveled to the UK to attend the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Kent. Juan Carlos was picked to serve as her escort. Following the wedding, Juan Carlos spent the summer of 1961 in Greece and the two announced their engagement in 1961.
Due to Juan Carlos’ uneasy position in Spain, an Athens wedding was planned for May, the beginning of the tourist season in Greece. The celebrations involved 4 ½ months of nearly round-the-clock preparation headed by Colonel Dimitri Levidis, Grand Marshal of the Greek royal court.
Their marriage has never been a happy one and Juan Carlos is known to have had multiple affairs. Though the King is in exile, they remain married, however it is known that they have lived largely separate lives for many years.

Queen Sofia (b. 1938)
Sofia is the eldest child of King Paul of Greece, and is the daughter, sister, wife, and mother of a King. She was educated at a boarding school in Germany, then studied childcare, music, and archeology in Athens. She was a reserve member of Greece’s gold medal winning sailing team at the 1960 Olympic games.
Sofia is now immensely popular in Spain. She is known to quietly endure the monarchy’s trials, putting her own professional obligations ahead of anything else. This was not, however, always the case. Throughout her reign she has been regarded with skepticism because of her foreign background and mediocre Spanish skills.
In 2008, Queen Sofía shared some of her political ideology during an interview with journalist Pilar Urbano. One of them was her belief that same-sex marriage should not be called marriage. "If those persons want to live together, dress up as bride and groom and get married, they can do so, but that should not be called marriage because it is not," the queen is quoted as saying in Urbano's book.
Her controversial comments about same-sex marriage particularly elicited outrage among liberal groups, and the Royal Palace quickly shared an apology but qualified it by implying she had been misquoted.
Though her husband is in exile, Sofia has remained in Spain and continues to undertake official duties on behalf of her son, the King. She is a vital weapon in Felipe VI’s battle to shore up the popularity of a monarchy hit by scandal and now, suggestions from some politicians that it might have seen better days. Consistently one of the most admired members of the Spanish Royal Family, the enduring affection and respect that Queen Sofía inspires will be needed by her son as he faces a turbulent future for the monarchy.
She speaks Greek, English, German and Spanish.

King Felipe VI (b. 1968)
Ascended the throne in 2014 upon the abdication of his father. He is head of state and commander-in-chief of the Spanish Armed Forces. He attended high school in Canada and studied at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He completed his academic studies by obtaining a Master of Science in Foreign Service degree from Georgetown, where he was the roommate of his cousin Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece.
From 1985-1993 he spent time completing his military training.
Felipe speaks Spanish, Catalan, French, English, and Greek.
He was a member of the Spanish Olympic sailing team at the Barcelona games in 1992 and was the Spanish team’s flag bearer.
Marriage:
The exact details around how Felipe and Letizia met are unknown, however it is reported that they met at a dinner party in 2003. They dated in secret for more than a year before surprising the public with their engagement in 2003.The two were married in 2004 in Madrid.

Author's Note: Google photos of Felipe. You won't be sorry.
Queen Letizia (b. 1972)
Letizia was born in Spain, the daughter of a journalist and registered nurse. She completed a bachelor’s degree in journalism as well as a master’s degree in audiovisual journalism. She worked as the evening anchor of the TVE evening news, the most viewed newscast in Spain. She reported from Washington DC in 2000 on the presidential elections, 2001 from Ground Zero, and 2003 from Iraq.
She was actually married once before Felipe to a writer and high school teacher after dating for almost 10 years. Their marriage lasted one year.
Letizia is far from Spain’s most popular member of the royal family. There was a public spat with her mother-in-law, and it made news when she scolded her fiance for interrupting her during their engagement interview.
She is known for her fashion and beauty. In 2008 she underwent surgery on her nose to “correct a respiratory problem”, however afterwards her nose was notably different.
Author's Note: I feel like I gave a negative impression of Letizia here, but to be honest it's a bit hard to find information about heher personality. I would love someone who is more familiar to fill us all in.
Watch her speak in English here
Felipe and Letizia have two daughters:
Crown Princess Leonor, Princess of Asturias (b. 2005)
Leonor is heir presumptive to the throne of Spain. She does not go by Crown Princess, but rather by Princess of Asturias, the title given to the heirs in Spain (like Prince of Wales in the UK). The Spanish monarchy operates under a system of male-preference cognatic primogeniture, meaning if Felipe were to have a male heir he would replace Leonor in the line of succession. Felipe and Letizia appear to be done having children, however.
In 2018, she was invested by her father with the Order of the Golden Fleece, the most senior order in Spain and the highest award the King can bestow. She is one of only 4 females to be inducted into it.
The other 3 women are Queen Elizabeth, Princess Beatrix, and Queen Margrethe of Denmark (no big deal!!!)
See the proud fathedaughter moment here.
In 2019, at age 14, she gave a speech in both English and Spanish at the Princess of Asturias Awards Ceremony. (such poise!!)

Infanta Sofia (b. 2007)
Sofia is the second daughter of the King and Queen. She is a student in Madrid.

Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo (b. 1963)
Elena is the eldest child of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia, however because Spain operates under male-preference cognatic primogeniture, her younger brother Felipe is King of Spain.
She married Jamie de Marichalar y Saenz de Tejada in Seville and has two children:
Elena and Jamie divorced in 2009. She undertakes engagements on behalf of her brother, the King.
Infanta Cristina, (stripped of title Duchess of Palma de Mallorca) (b. 1965)
Cristina was born in Madrid, the younger daughter of the King and Queen. She is a sailor and competed in the 1988 summer Olympics. She completed a degree in political science from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, then an MA in international relations from New York University in 1990. She then worked at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
She speaks Spanish, Catalan, English, French, and Greek.
Cristina married handball player Inaki Urdangarin in Barcelona in 1997. They have four children:
I talked about this above, but she and her husband were investigated and tried for fraud for their ties to a corruption scandal involving a company they owned. Cristina was acquitted, however her husband is currently serving a prison sentence.
Because of the scandal, her brother officially stripped her of her title in 2015. Her right of succession and the royal title of Infanta were unaffected.

Vacation
Random note but the Spanish royals vacation in Palma de Mallorca for the summer each year and always produce some of my favorite family photos.
See some here, here, here, or just google them.
A Monarchy in Trouble
Though Felipe and his mother, Queen Sofia, are well-liked, support for the monarchy in Spain has always been thin at best. Coupled with all of the scandals discussed above, Felipe is tasked with saving a monarchy that at times is extremely unpopular with the public. He has had to publicly distance himself from his father, his sister, and other family friends involved in these scandals. This has eroded the appearance of family unity in the monarchy.
From an article:
Despite his attractive family and relative youth, Felipe has struggled to maintain the level of popularity he had heading into his current position. As head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces as well as king, he looks all-powerful on paper, but like many other royals his role is more figurehead than policy-maker. Spain's monarch is looked to for guidance and leadership, though, and he can certainly still be blamed when things go wrong.
Felipe, who in 2015 cut his own salary by almost 20 percent as the country continued to pull itself out of its recession, received a four-minute ovation after delivering his annual address marking the opening of Spain's new legislative session in February, in which he said that the opposing parties that have formed the current coalition government must come together, that "the time has come for words, for arguments and for reasoning, from a position of mutual respect."
To add to his troubles, Catalonia has been trying to split from Spain and gain independence for quite sometime, and Catalonian’s do not want a monarchy. In fact, they recently passed a non-binding motion condemning the monarchy in the wake of Juan Carlos’s departure from Spain. The proposal “Catalonia is a republic and does not want a king” was passed by 69 votes in favor and 65 against. In a recent article out of Catalonia, less than 15% of Catalans prefer having a king to a republic.
As a result, Felipe and Letizia have been pulling out all of the stops to present a united family front and a strong monarchy to the public - they have been undertaking public engagements more often, invited the press into their home, and we’re seeing more and more of their two daughters in an attempt to improve their favorability in Spain.

  • MWC: October 19th
  • MAC: November 2nd
  • UMass: THIS WEEK
I wanted to keep it somewhat consistent in how we're moving foward. Those who had games scheduled at the start of the season get a bit more of a benefit of the doubt, but I wasn't planning on conferences restarting their season mid season.
